Living craft in tarsanas
The traditional art of wooden shipbuilding has lived here since the mid-19th century, remaining almost unchanged through time. A place by the sea, deeply tied to one family, through whose hands more than 5,000 hulls have passed. Hundreds of craftsmen and workers learned the trade here, in a shipyard that became a landmark for the entire Aegean. Within this space, the tools of the shipwright prevail, together with the smells of oil, resin, and sea air. The sála—the most reliable design method, with full-scale plans drawn directly onto the floor—was for years a well-kept secret, passed down from father to son. Here, you become a fellow traveler in a tradition that “sails through the waves” and across the years, with patience, mastery, and heart.
